Surrey cricket club wins second LV=Insurance County Championship

Surry cricket club became county champions following a 10-wicket triumph over Yorkshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship

The match was effectively settled on the third day at the Kia Oval, when Yorkshire were bowled out for 126 in their second innings, a total Surrey had no problems in knocking off. It secured a second title in three years for a side that has continued to impress under the captaincy of Rory Burns.

After the opening two LV=Insurance County Championship matches had been drawn, Surrey began their season with a big win over Gloucestershire at the Kia Oval, before suffering a heavy defeat away to Warwickshire.

They bounced back with a big win over local rivals Middlesex at Lord’s and followed that up with another victory over Leicestershire at the Kia Oval. The match against Kent at Canterbury finished in a draw, as did the next match against Lancashire at Southport.

Surrey’s spinners help to gain big away wins against Gloucestershire and Warwickshire

A third draw in four matches followed against Yorkshire at Scarborough, but Surrey returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a big win over Gloucestershire at Bristol. It was a match were their spin-bowling attack of Amar Virdi, Dan Moriarty and Will Jacks took 17 of the 20 wickets to fall.

Surrey suffered back-to-back defeats against Warwickshire away and Somerset at home, but a draw against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl was followed by a big win over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

After a draw with Essex at Chelmsford, Surrey lost to Lancashire at the Kia Oval, but responded with a big win away to Derbyshire. They suffered another defeat away to Kent, before a thrilling draw with Middlesex at the Kia Oval.

That result meant Surrey needed at least a draw from their final match of the season against Yorkshire at the Kia Oval to secure the LV= Insurance County Championship title. When rain washed out the final day, that was enough to seal the title.

It was a remarkable achievement for a Surrey side that had been written off by many at the start of the season after losing several key players from the previous season’s title win.

Burns, in particular, deserves immense credit for Surrey's success. He has captained the side with distinction and led from the front with some excellent batting performances.
