USA Wins Gold in Men's 4x100 Meter Freestyle Relay at Rio Olympics
Caeleb Dressel and Nathan Adrian Lead U.S. Team to Victory
France Takes Silver, Australia Earns Bronze
The United States men's swimming team claimed gold in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Sunday night. The team of Caeleb Dressel, Michael Phelps, Ryan Held, and Nathan Adrian finished in a time of 3:09.92, just ahead of France (3:10.53) and Australia (3:11.37).
Dressel led off for the United States and gave the team a strong start, splitting 47.92 seconds. Phelps followed with a split of 47.12, and Held split 47.73. Adrian anchored the relay with a split of 47.15, securing the victory for the United States.
The win was the United States' first in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay since 2008. It was also the team's 10th gold medal in swimming at the Rio Olympics, a record for the United States.
France's team of Mehdy Metella, Fabien Gilot, Florent Manaudou, and Jeremy Stravius finished in second place, just 0.61 seconds behind the United States. Australia's team of James Roberts, Kyle Chalmers, James Magnussen, and Cameron McEvoy finished in third place, 1.45 seconds behind the United States.
