Upcoming Solar Eclipse: What You Need to Know
April 8, 2024: A Total Solar Eclipse
Timings for Major US Cities
According to NASA, here are the timings for some US cities along the path of totality for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse:
- Westchester, NY: 2:18 PM EDT
- New York City, NY: 2:30 PM EDT
- Niagara Falls, NY: 2:25 PM EDT
- Buffalo, NY: 2:19 PM EDT
What is the Path of Totality?
The path of totality is the narrow band on Earth's surface where the Moon completely blocks the Sun. Observers within this path will experience a total solar eclipse. In North America, the path of totality will stretch from Mexico through the central and eastern United States, and into Canada.
Maximum View of the Eclipse
The maximum view of the eclipse, also known as the "deepest point" of the eclipse, occurs when the Sun is at its most obscured. This point will occur at different times depending on location. For example, in New York City, the maximum eclipse will be at 2:45 PM EDT.
Safety Precautions
It is important to note that looking directly at the Sun during a total solar eclipse can cause permanent eye damage. Special solar eclipse glasses or viewers should be used to safely observe the eclipse. These glasses filter out harmful ultraviolet radiation.
